The Rise of AI-Generated Content on Social Media: A Second Viewpoint

Social media is being changed by artificial intelligence. Deepfakes, automated posts and other types of AI generated content is becoming more common. All these technologies raised serious legal and ethical concerns. AI generated content has some creative, practical benefits, though it has risks to privacy, truth, and accountability. Can these challenges be handled by the existing regulations? As a college student and also an active social media user, so I can clearly see both sides of the story. In one way, AI has the potential to create new content and ways for digital interaction. Alternatively, it jeopardizes the trust in information, making it harder to distinguish the fact from the fiction. Innovation and responsibility need to be balanced by social media platforms, users, and those that have the power to define social media policy.

Diving into accountability, I think the biggest law problem deals with taking responsibility. Generated content by artificial intelligence makes it hard to determine what should be attributed to humans versus machines. When AI distributes incorrect or dangerous data whose faults must be blamed on its developer or user or on the platform service? Today's legal system addresses responsibility issues of human creators rather than automated machines. People use deepfakes to make public figure impersonations and distribute political deceitfulness plus fraudulent schemes. However, global law systems cover these harmful items less when compared to other content types. Many nations have passed regulations versus deepfake misuse including China and the U.K. but they face great difficulties enforcing the rules. The federal government continues to propose guidelines, but American courts remain challenged by legal cases that involve AI technology.

Second, I think copyright is another concern. Using AI technology produces text output that matches existing copyrighted content. I’m wondering should AI products get legal protection for their work. I believe there’s questions of ownership arise when an AI product is generated including the developer the user prompter and the company training AI models. These questions remain unresolved. According to my research, the U.S. Copyright Office decided AI-generated works with no human input cannot get copyright protection, but the decision still needs more details about AI-assisted creations. This just simply means to me that without precise legal standards disputes, controversy between parties over AI content ownership will keep rising. Another issue is data privacy. Models need extensive datasets for training which they extract from the internet without getting permission from users. People doubt if AI creation damages personal privacy in some way. It just makes me wonder if building unauthorized synthetic voices or deepfakes through AI systems counts as identity theft? It’s obvious that current privacy regulations cannot adequately control how AI replicates individual visual representations. People may misuse this exception to commit fraudulent acts and harass others with political objectives in mind.

Beyond legal challenges, AI-generated content raises ethical concerns. It creates problems for truth and authenticity. For example, we all know that today’s AI technology generates highly realistic images videos and texts that seem authentic even though they are artificial. The system enables people to distribute untrue information more efficiently. I was on Chinese TikTok, and I saw how Deepfake technology produces realistic images of politicians stating words that they did not actually say. From my perspective, social media seems to become chaotic when AI produces news items that people find hard to verify as official sources. It is no doubt when people lose faith in what they find online public discussion and rational debate decline. The main issue with AI goes beyond spreading data errors into the fundamental breakdown of trust in genuine content. Everyone stops believing any source of news when facts can be duplicated artificially.

Furthermore, AI systems used as influencers and chatbots create moral problems for users. Businesses use AI computer systems with customized characters to engage users while presenting brand deals and creating personalized links. People should consider this method of promotion as potentially unethical. According to current social media regulations an AI promoted product must still identify as digital. I think the Federal Trade Commission lacks rules about working with AI-generated social media personalities. The trend of using AI for digital influence is increasing ethical debates about hiding manipulation methods. I’m worried if produced content by artificial intelligence will affect how we regard original input from humans. Meanwhile, how original human work may be defamed as “AI work”. When machines produce music art and literature without delay should we consider their output less important than human works? There’s just diverse factors of AI that serves artists as a tool but can replace them directly in their work roles. Media and entertainment companies should use AI as an enhancement tool to favor human creativity development.

Considering these risks, it has been argued that AI generated content should be highly regulated. So governments would be able to dictate that certain AI content be labeled. Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter, among others, should take steps to transparentize AI generated images and videos: watermarking them. Experts have even been suggesting the qualification of platforms accountable for AI generated misinformation. Companies could also be forced to reveal to transparency laws those things. Without regulations, AI could play a part in manipulating elections, spreading fictions, or even creating malicious digital identities. On the other hand, there are people who fear such regulations would affect innovation. As a positive thing, AI listed many positive applications from automating tiresome tasks to help people with disabilities to be more accessible. Overregulation could limit these benefits. Some propose that AI generated content should not be banned. Instead of outright restrictions, educating people on how to identify AI generated media is better and more likely to have an effect. AI detection tools may also be augmented in social media platforms. The best way might be to encourage ethical AI development rather than prohibit it. At the end of the day, I feel in favor of the transparency. If there’s addition in the law field, I suggest it should strengthen regulations in transparency. People need to know when they are engaged with AI generated content. AI is a useful tool for solving problems, but misinformation is also a real and serious problem. Instead of purging AI generated content, the aim should be to put that in place with responsible use.

Overall, there’s no doubt that AI-generated content is changing social media. It offers creative and practical benefits but also introduces significant risks. I believe it’s crucial for the legal system to address accountability, copyright, and privacy concerns. Ethical challenges, such as misinformation and manipulation, simply require more common sense and consideration. While new laws may help, education and platform responsibility are equally important. AI is here to stay. The challenge is ensuring that it serves users, rather than deceiving them. Transparency, regulation, and digital literacy will shape the future of AI-generated content.
